Clinton Hill Community Action, in collaboration with Greater Newark LISC, launched a redevelopment planning process in October 2020 for the Upper Clinton Hill section of the neighborhood. This plan will be submitted to the state’s Department of Community Affairs, making us eligible to apply for up to $1M to support the plan’s implementation.

The planning process is being coordinated by New Jersey Community Capital’s Strategy Team, whose team of urban planners has worked with neighborhoods like Clinton Hill all around the state, including Lincoln Park (right here in Newark), Paterson, and Atlantic City.

Given the limitations on in-person gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic, CHCA pushed forward with an innovative engagement strategy. To date, we have reached more than 350 residents by partnering with organizations like the Newark Community Street Team, South Ward Environmental Alliance, South Ward Special Improvement District, Mildred Helms Park Resurrection Committee, and the Boys & Girls Club who all hosted small group meetings with residents in their network. In addition, for the last several months the team has presented the priorities of the plan and key actions to residents joining the monthly Concerned Citizens meetings.
