“In our neighborhood, it’s not just the blue house. You know who lives there.”

Dr. Alice Terrell-Bryant (pictured on the right with two neighbors) has lived in Clinton Hill with her husband for 2 ½ years. Another house they had under contract canceled at the last minute, and they found themselves going back to the drawing board. “When we saw the house, we fell in love,” Alice declared. “The character, window seats, original wood floors, details.” And they also love the neighborhood and knew they would “be a part of the community.”

Their home, over 110 years old, is one of the many historic homes in the neighborhood. “We have the same beautiful homes as Montclair, Glen Ridge, and Forest Hill right here in Newark. The neighbors are just good people — people who want to make the community better,” says Alice. She also acknowledges the challenges, including the high number of abandoned properties and illegal dumping, which takes away from the beauty of the neighborhood.

She hopes to see coffee shops, bistros, and dry cleaning services coming back to the community. As a teacher of 23 years, Alice is an advocate for re-opening the Clinton Hill library branch and providing more opportunities for youth. She’d like to see scholarships available for neighborhood youth for both college and travel. “Traveling opened my eyes.”

Alice’s first introduction to CHCA was experiencing Executive Director Khaatim Sherrer El as the commencement speaker for the LISC Newark Resident Leadership Academy in 2020. Then, she received fliers in her mailbox about a neighborhood clean up and she participated. She continues to take part in the monthly clean ups and is active in the Beat the Blight Campaign and monthly Clinton Hill Concerned Citizens meetings.

“Clinton Hill is a hidden jewel. CHCA is wonderful and S 10th Street is so grateful to have them as a partner.”
