South Ward Gains Direct Access to Newark Airport Station

The Newark Airport Station Access Project is a major public investment that will finally give South Ward residents direct, convenient access to Newark Liberty International Airport’s rail station. The plan includes extending the pedestrian bridge to Frelinghuysen Avenue and adding elevators, escalators, real-time transit information, and dedicated pickup and drop-off zones. With a budget of 160 million dollars, the project will connect the community to NJ TRANSIT, Amtrak, and the AirTrain in a way that has never existed before.

For South Ward residents, the improvements mean significantly shorter trips to the airport, easier access to airport-related jobs, and a more reliable connection to the regional transit network. “I could have walked to the airport if there was access. I am looking forward to coming back and cutting the ribbon,” Mayor Ras J. Baraka said.

Beyond transportation, the project is viewed as a step toward greater equity, ensuring that long-time Newark residents benefit from the growth and development happening around them rather than being left out of it.
