CHCA kicks off Beautify the Block with a clean up beautification project planned for Hawthorne Ave.

CHCA joined the Keep Newark Beautiful campaign to kick off this Spring and Summer’s series of block clean ups, starting with Hawthorne Ave, where CHCA’s new office is located, on Saturday, May 1, 2021.

Southward Councilmember John James joined CHCA and six resident volunteers to clean up the Hawthorne Ave commercial corridor and vacant lot off Wolcott Ter. Cleaning up the corridor is just the first step in efforts to revitalize Hawthorne Ave. The plan includes (1) partnering with businesses and organizations located along the corridor to clean up in front of and around their establishments; (2) installing flower pots and trash cans; and (3) improving the streetscape (e.g., lighting, signage, security gates).

The clean up series is being called Beautify the Block and CHCA will partner with resident leaders, including block associations, to organize clean ups and beautification projects throughout the neighborhood. The next clean ups are scheduled for Saturday, June 12.

To get involved, or host a clean up on your block, contact CHCA’s Community Builder Kisha Ingraham at 201-228-0757.
